Prerequisites:

Student must have:

- chain saw certificate

- basic knowledge in silviculture

- preparations for working abroad


Learning outcome (LO): The student describes the meaning of ecological niches and ecological succession

describes threats to biodiversity and explains how sustainable management can be carried out identifies and implements pollution control measure

is aware of current forest and environmental legislation and environmental management systems

To reach LO the student must have the following knowledge, skills and competences.

Knowledge

The student can

  • Describe the functions and interactions of an ecosystem and describe population dynamics and regulation - food chains, food webs

  • Explain the potential of forests to produce renewable energy

  • Give examples of global environmental threats to forests

  • Describe water resources and protection, minimize harmful environmental impacts on water ecosystems

  • Describe the goals of nature conservation in forest management

  • Describe the dynamics and qualities of natural forests

  • Estimate nature values for identification of biologically valuable forest habitats and practice nature conservation regarding specific sites, surfaces and protected areas

Skills

The student is able to

  • take part in hunting activites

  • work with bioenergy

  • manage competing vegetation in young forest

take measures for soil and water conservation

  • regulate species composition in young mixed stands

  • identify the features of a natural forest

  • choose optimal working methods bearing in mind ecology, landscape, economics and multi-purpose objectives

  • identify key species to determine valuable forest habitats


Competence

The student shows responsibility by

  • discussing the effect of different hunting measures on game population dynamics

  • discussing the market of bioenergy and the influence on the other wood markets

  • discussing the influence of global threats on local environment

  • evaluating different measures taken and suggest alternatives

  • reflecting on how the measures taken can be applied in your home country

  • reflecting on which principles we can use for the management of the commercial forest

  • comparing and discuss the difference between forest management methods

  • reflecting on how todays nature conservation measures will affect tomorrows industrial forestry members

  • reflecting on health and safety activities
