Can Do
After completing this lesson, learners will:
- Have a brief knowledge about the main aspects concerning their everyday work environment, and
- Know how to improve it on your own by following simple rules and advice
Warm Up
- Did you know that to maximize customer turnover, and thus profits, the leading fast-food chain has specifically designed hard seats, so that customers have to get up and leave after seating for only 15 minutes? In contrast, luxury restaurants adopt an opposite strategy: they try to maximize their profits by providing comfortable seats so that customers seat longer, order one or two drinks more, and perhaps an overpriced dessert?
- Did you know that to maximize profits, airlines have restricted leg space and passenger mobility in airplanes to the bare minimum, even though prolonged sitting in cramped positions without getting up to stretch out or move around has been known to cause vein thrombosis?
- Did you know that recent medical research has found that forgetting to regularly get up from the chair and move around is the cause of poor health and causes many modern day illnesses, such as respiratory failure, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, heart palpitations, decreased work performance, sexual drive, etc?
- Who is generally (not only legally) responsible for your work environment?
- In your opinion, which small changes in your daily routine at work may improve your work conditions?
Learning Tasks
Read pages 2:1 - 2:8 of the book "Working in Harvesting Teams", Part 1, and
- Prepare a list with the unknown and/or interesting terms, look them up in the dictionary, and discuss them in class
- Write a short summary and read it loud before the class audience
- Develop your own mnemonics for the hard-to-remember terms, and
- Have fun by organizing a brainstorming session/mnemonics party in class to improve and share them
